Good, competent governing boards are crucial to the success of well run nonprofit organizations. However, the process of governance is often not well understood, creating organizational dysfunction. In an age of accountability and government intrusion, governing bodies need to understand their responsibilities and the importance of shared vision.

While I work for the most part with senior staff, I often am invited to meet with board members regarding issues of mutual concern. In these situations, I work with the CEO and the board together.

A portion of my executive coaching practice is devoted to working with the chairpersons or presidents of the board, the executive committee, or/and the other members of the board. We usually focus on the key issues of governance: developing an historical perspective, assuming fiduciary responsibilities including fundraising, assuming responsibility for and participating in strategic planning, and having open forth-right discussions of key issues. This process leads to the outcome we seek, good governance.

The focus of this coaching is to make the board more effective. We achieve this by clarifying what the issues are, assessing board performance, and guiding the board to adopt best practices.
